What is an ECU?
The engine control unit, or ECU, is your vehicle’s on-board computer, and is responsible for controlling a number of different engine functions, including the ignition timing, turbocharger boost pressure and fuelling.
Like any computer, the ECU has software with different settings, and these can be changed to alter the performance and driving characteristics of a vehicle. This process is known as ECU remapping, reflashing, or sometimes ‘chipping’.
Why do I need a reflash?
When manufacturers build a new vehicle, they programme the ECU to certain set specifications, but in the vast majority of cases – these aren’t the optimum settings.
This is because ECUs are programmed with in-built safeguards designed to cover the use of substandard or lower octane fuel, and to protect the engine from the damaging effects of neglect – like leaving it too long between services.
In addition, some manufacturers artificially restrict performance to ensure that a vehicle fits into a certain class to suit fleet buyers and the company car market.
Generally, stock ECU settings hamper the performance and economy of an engine, and by optimising them, you can improve power and efficiency without compromising the durability and longevity of your vehicle.
We have Stage 1 and Stage 2 remapping options for most vehicles as well as custom calibration options for vehicles with bolt on modifications.
TCU Remapping – ZF and DSG Remap
ZF and DSG Gearbox Software is designed for use with standard vehicles with standard components and within all of their mechanical tolerances.
We class this as our fast road application, which is the best all round performance for stock vehicles.
Increased Torque Limiter
When tuning the engine management system, torque limiters are increased. However, if the vehicle is equipped with a DSG or ZF gearbox the engine output will be limited by the torque limiter set in the TCU module. We raise the TCU torque limiter to match the engine torque output.
Quicker Shift Speeds
Shift speeds can be increased by up to 20%, this reduces lag and improves acceleration. The quicker shift speeds will also give a smoother transition between gear changes and improve paddle shift response time.
All our software is designed to work with your specific Transmission Control Module (TCU) found in your vehicle, we take our software through extensive research, analysis, development, and testing as part of our software development program.
Celtic Tuning have developed a range of calibrations and have gone even further by developing our system to give you ultimate choice of options. For diesel or petrol applications, our system will allow you to specify exactly which options you would like and the exact requested values. Once the values have been entered our bespoke developed system will automatically generate the software.
Launch Control
All DSG controller, whether active or not, has launch control built into the software. We are able to activate or deactivate launch control and also set the RPM points to customers’ requirements.
Kickdown
The DSG controller also controls the kick down function. We are able to stop the auto kick down which will enable the vehicle to be driven in gear at lower RPM’s without auto change.
